420 Day Has Become Mainstream
More states are legalizing marijuana and the result is a plethora of deals
Legend has it that 420 Day started in Marin County, California, where a group of High School students would meet by a statue each day at 4:20 p.m. to smoke weed. Their code to gather to smoke was, simply, “420”.
The 420 term stuck, thanks to those teens, and each year on April 20, people celebrate by lighting up at 4:20 p.m.
For years, many restaurants and bars have hosted special “stoner” dinners and drinks on 420 Day.
At first, those menus were shocking to some, even if they were tongue-in-cheek. A Miami restaurant called Eating House, for example, started its annual 420 ritual in 2012 with a menu of offerings like mac & cheese and short rib nachos for $4.20 each as a semi-underground event that resulted in people waiting for hours to sit down for a meal. Now, the restaurant is celebrating its 12th year of 420 dinners.
With more and more states legalizing (or at least, decriminalizing) recreational pot use, the idea of celebrating 420 with munchies has gone mainstream with many chain restaurants offering 420 specials.
If you’re celebrating 420, here are some fun deals and specials to try. All deals area valid on April 20, 2024.
