Bon Appetit's Best Restaurants, Food and Wine's Best New Chefs
Plus a truly horrendous pie for the King and a Halloween candy shortage
Bon Appetit has released its annual 50 Best New Restaurants list, 2022 edition.
Elazar Sontag, restaurant editor for Bon Appetit, invites people to “shake off any skepticism as to whether going out is worth it” these days. Though the list includes classics like the recently reopened Brooklyn’s Gage & Tollner, there are a lot of casual spots and bakeries that offer cheap meals and quick bites, like Paradis Books and Bread, a bookstore in a suburb of Miami that offers…well…bread with some sides and toppings.
Food and Wine has released its annual Best New Chefs list.
In the introduction, Food and Wine editor Khushbu Shah calls the class of 2022, “a rising generation of culinary talent that’s committed to leading and feeding others with a deep sense of integrity and hospitality — and to cooking up incredibly delicious, deeply personal, culturally grounded food.” The chefs are chosen by Shah, who visited 24 cities in three months, dining anonymously at restaurants. Chefs who have been in charge of a kitchen or pastry program for five years or less are eligible.
The new King might just get a gift of blood-sucking fish from Michigan
Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96, with her son, King Charles III taking her place as monarch. What better way to commemorate this passing of the crown than with a giant cake filled with giant, toothy, bloodsucking parasitic fish? Since the Middle Ages, monarchs have been presented with lamprey pie — the last time being 2015 when the city of Gloucester presented a giant lamprey pie to the Queen. There’s one catch: There are no more lampreys in England, so they have to be imported from the U.S., where they’re considered an invasive species. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission provided the heinous creatures in 2015, and is ready to ship over frozen lampreys for another pie if they get the call once again.
A potential candy shortage for Halloween
If you think blood-sucking parasitic fish are spooky, how about a shortage of Halloween treats for some truly horrifying news? The Hershey Company has issued a warning that there’s likely going to be a shortage of candy for Halloween and Christmas this year. The candy company cited a shortage of raw ingredients and supply chain issues, according to Reuters. The Hershey Company produces Hershey’s kisses, KitKat, Twizzlers, Jolly Ranchers, Hershey Bars, Reeses’s Peanut Butter Cups, and more.
