Henry Winkler's Thanksgiving Leftover Sandwich
An American icon describes his favorite meal -- and he's Team Canned Cranberry
Whether you feasted with family or had a Friendsgiving with the family of your choice, we here at Broken Palate hope your Thanksgiving was bountiful. And we are grateful for you, our readers.
Now that the big holiday is out of the way, it’s time to get to the best part: leftovers. Although simply picking at the turkey from the fridge while the door is open remains a completely valid way of spending the next few days, nothing beats the Thanksgiving sandwich — a happy meal that offers the best of Thanksgiving in each bite.
There’s no wrong way to make the Thanksgiving sandwich — pile on the turkey, cranberry sauce, and dressing to make a giant Dagwood-esque meal or make sliders from leftover dinner rolls.
But if you want a classic sandwich, it’s time to defer to the Fonz, himself: Henry Winkler.
I saw the iconic actor and Barry star at the Miami Book Fair, where he absolutely charmed the audience while talking about his new memoir, Being Henry: The Fonz…and Beyond. The book, by the way, is a fantastic read and makes a great holiday gift for anyone who grew up watching Happy Days.
Winkler, wearing a fuzzy green and purple sweater in the 80-degree Miami heat (he explained that it was a birthday gift), talked about his Happy Days audition, growing up on the Upper West Side of New York City to German immigrants who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, and how being Fonzie changed his life forever.
Winkler also talked about his dream meal, which happens to be the perfect Thanksgiving leftover sandwich. The actor and humanitarian got so excited about the sandwich, he got up out of his seat to describe this piece of perfection:
“Wonder Bread, mayo, turkey, stuffing, cranberry — out of the can, none of that berry shit, more mayo, Wonder Bread. Smoosh. Cut in half — and if there’s any left over, some creamed spinach.”
So, be cool like the Fonz and make this sandwich today. Bon Appetit…Ayyyyyyy.
