Father’s Day is that time of the year when you celebrate the first man in your life…with socks. Or a tie if you’re old school.
This year, why not give dad what he really wants: a good meal, some good Scotch or bourbon, and for his kid to pick up the tab for once.
If you're celebrating in New York City, here are some exceptional offerings for Father’s Day.
Carve Your Feelings….in Meat
For the not-so-subtle dad: The Times Square Edition Hotel is offering a special Father’s Day tomahawk steak, engraved with “#1 Dad” on the bone!
Sunday Brunch “Dad” Style
So you want to take dad to brunch but he’s not into the rose-all-day places that feature pink neon signs that say “bottoms up, bitches” or “YOLO”?. Take him to Bar Mercer for a weekend brunch that’s more cozy pub than tea party. Instead of a mimosa, order a perfect Old Fashioned. It pairs perfectly with the housemade pigs in a blanket (a personal favorite and a “must have”) and a dozen oysters. Follow with the steak au poivre or the hangover pasta with ham, bacon, sunny side egg, pecorino, and black pepper. Bar Mercer is open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday, starting at noon.
The Animal House is a Farm to Table Meal
If your dad is more of the meat-and-potatoes type than the tiny, “interesting” tasting menu kind, take him (and the entire family) to Marc Forgione’s NoLita restaurant, Peasant for its Animal House Menu.
The dinner, which costs $145 per person with a minimum of eight guests, includes a whole chicken, a duck, a rabbit, and a goat shank. Also included is prosciutto draped over a sourdough pillow, ricotta, and olives; calamari with squid and fermented long hot peppers; wood-roasted oysters with nduja and bone marrow butter, and more. Reservations three days in advance are suggested by emailing animal@peasantny.com, with a very limited number available for walk-ins and last-minute reservations.
If you’re looking for something smaller than an entire zoo, the restaurant offers a Sunday chicken dinner. A heritage breed rotisserie chicken is served over local potatoes with a sizzling caper-shallot butter emulsified with a smoky chicken jus tableside. $82 buys you a whole chicken, $41 gets you a half.
