Make Mariah Carey's 'We Belong Together' Brew for St. Patrick's Day
The iconic diva's Black Irish is a delicious way to celebrate
When we think of Mariah Carey, our minds naturally goes to the iconic singer’s five-octave range and her catalog of hits that include “Emotions,” “Vision of Love,” and “Always be my Baby.” But, the award-winning singer, songwriter, and performer wants us to also think of the Emerald Isle.
Carey has tapped into her Irish roots (her mother, Patricia, is an opera singer and vocal coach of Irish descent) to create her Black Irish Irish Cream liqueur. The name, Black Irish, is also a nod to her father, who is of Black and Venezuelan descent. The result is a 17-ABV Irish Cream made with Irish whiskey and Irish dairy cream.
Carey has certainly put her mark on the liquid: Her initials are stamped on the seal, and a butterfly — long considered the singer’s symbol and spirit animal — is on every label (a 750 ml bottle has a suggested retail of $29). Though Black Irish comes in salted caramel and white chocolate flavors, it’s the traditional Irish Cream that’s one for your bar. I received a bottle and immediately made a creamy martini with it (Two parts premium vodka of choice, one part Black Irish, and a half shot of espresso shaken and strained into a martini glass).
It also works poured on vanilla ice cream with sliced bananas for a super-quick dessert or to spike a hot chocolate. Black Irish also sips nicely when chilled over a large ice cube.
Fans of Carey might want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (or any day) with one of two cocktails named after some of her iconic hits. The “Fantasy” is a classic spiked milkshake. Add a touch of green food coloring to turn it into a “Fantasy” Shamrock shake.
The “We Belong Together Brew” is a creamy take on a traditional Irish coffee and makes for a lovely sipper St. Patrick’s Day or any time you want an after dinner nightcap.
The Fantasy
Ingredients
1 cup vanilla ice cream
3⁄4 to 1 cup milk, depending on desired consistency
3 oz. of Black Irish liqueur
Whipped cream, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, cherries, and chocolate shavings (optional).
Directions
Blend together ice cream, 3⁄4 cup milk and Black Irish until smooth; add additional milk as needed to reach desired consistency.
Top with whipped cream and additional favorite garnishes
”We Belong Together” Brew
Ingredients
1 oz. Irish whiskey
1/2 oz. coffee liqueur
1 1⁄2 oz. Black Irish liqueur
Whipped cream. Cocoa powder (optional).
Directions
Fill glass mug or footed glass mug with hot water and let stand 1-2 minutes to heat up glass; pour out.
Fill glass with coffee, Irish whiskey, and Black Irish liqueur, and stir.
Top with whipped cream, and dust with cocoa powder.
