Mardi Gras, literally French for Fat Tuesday, marks the custom of eating decadent food, drinking, and partying before the fasting of Lent. Although practiced around the world, New Orleans is the capital of Mardi Gras, with thousands of people celebrating with parades, bead throwing, and parties. If you can’t get to New Orleans, you can still celebrate by making some Louisiana specialties such as red beans and rice, gumbo, or muffulettas for dinner.
World Central Kitchen Mobilizes in Turkey
On February 6, Turkey and Syria were rocked by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake. Just six hours later, another massive, 7.5-magnitude quake hit the same region. The two quakes killed more than 40,000 people and left thousands more injured and at least one million people displaced. Just days after the horrific natural disaster, World Central Kitchen (WCK) mobilized teams to feed people affected by the disaster. The organization served one million meals just one week in. The Saturday Night Fever Pizzeria Sells its Last Slices
With a soundtrack by the Bee Gees and a young John Travolta starring as Tony Manero, Saturday Night Fever is an iconic look at the 70s disco era. The movie, famously, starts with Tony ordering two slices of pizza at Lenny’s Pizzeria, then eating them as a “double decker” while strutting down 86th Street. In 2018, John Travolta revisited the beloved pizzeria — with 10,000 fans in attendance. The pizzeria, a Brooklyn staple for seven decades, sadly closed last week.
