California is about to get a new Michelin Guide.
Michelin announced the date and details for its 2024 Michelin Guide California ceremony, which announces the restaurants that will earn Bib Gourmands and Stars.
The ceremony will be held on August 5 at the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, a resort located about 30 minutes from San Francisco.
Currently, there are 615 restaurants listed in the 2023 California Guide. Of that impressive number, 142 restaurants have a Bib Gourmand designation, 66 are rated One Star, 12 are Two Star, and an impressive six California restaurants have been given a Three Star designation.
The Three Star restaurants include Atelier Crenn in San Francisco, Addison in San Diego, Benu in San Francisco, Quince in San Francisco, Single Thread in Healdsburg, and (of course), Thomas Keller’s the French Laundry in Yountville.
Gwendal Poullennec, the International Director of the Michelin Guides, said, “California continues to showcase an impressionable gastronomy scene with international influences and outstanding cuisine.”
In the summer months leading up to the August 5th ceremony, expect Michelin to “leak” additions to the California Guide. The Guide is known for sharing tidbits of intel leading up to its ceremonies to whet the public’s appetite for things to come.
Michelin has been rapidly expanding its reach throughout North America.
Starting with New York in 2005, the tire company-turned-gourmand guide then added a San Francisco Guide in 2008 — expanding the Guide to incorporate all of California in 2019. In 2011, Michelin introduced a Chicago Guide. In 2017, it introduced a Washington D.C. Guide. 2022 was a busy year for Michelin when it expanded to Miami/Orlando/Tampa, Vancouver, and Toronto. In 2023, Colorado and Atlanta received the Michelin treatment.
If one could speculate, Philadelphia and New Orleans seem prime for a Michelin Guide. Only time will tell, but I’d bet a set of tires on it.
