The Lone Star State Gets Michelin Star Treatment
Houston Will Host Texas’s Inaugural Michelin Guide Ceremony
Texas will finally get the culinary recognition it deserves when the Michelin Guide comes to the Lone Star State.
In a statement, Michelin announced that it will publish a Texas Guide, focused on Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth, in association with Travel Texas, the state’s tourism agency. Tim Fennell, director of Travel Texas said of the partnership, “The Michelin Guide Texas will illustrate to global travelers the culinary journey that’s waiting to be discovered in our state, featuring restaurants that embody our heritage and introducing innovative chefs and local artisans who are redefining our food scene. The introduction of the Guide will be a tremendous asset for Texas, promoting our rich and diverse food culture and elevating the restaurant scene to an international stage.”
Michelin is growing fast, and Texas will be the 11th location in North America to receive a Guide. In North America, there are Michelin Guides in New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., California, Florida (Miami/Tampa/Orlando), Toronto, Vancouver, Colorado, Atlanta, Mexico, and Texas.
The ceremony will be held on November 11 in an as-yet-to-be-announced location in Houston. The host city was chosen in collaboration with Houston First, the city’s tourism bureau. “We are delighted to be hosting the inaugural Michelin Guide Texas Ceremony in the vibrant city of Houston,” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides. “Houston is full of culinary innovation and world-class hospitality, which goes hand in hand with our values at the Michelin Guide.”
The addition of Texas to the Michelin roster is an acknowledgment of the state’s rich and varied culinary cultures from barbecue and Tex-Mex to Native American and Spanish and beyond.
Texas has a long history of excellent food made by passionate chefs. The state is so large, that the James Beard Foundation has put the state into its own Best Chef category. This year, Ana Liz Pulido of Ana Liz Taqueria in Mission, Texas won the James Beard Award for Best Chef in Texas.
Michelin is on a roll. On October 3, it will announce the 2024 entries into the latest Vancouver Guide at a ceremony at the city’s Commodore Ballroom.
