New York leads North America at the World’s 50 Best Bars, with Double Chicken Please nominated for top bar in the U.S. and No. 6 worldwide.
The swanky bar from Taiwanese natives GN Chan and Fay Chen features two concepts, the front room with a fleet of numbered “taptails” like the #1 with Aperol, passionfruit, sparkling wine, and soda, while the back room sells cocktails that reimagine familiar dishes in liquid form, like Japanese cold noodles, pizza, Key lime pie, beet salad, mango sticky rice, and so on.
The food menu is anchored by Mark Chou’s chicken-centric savory bites, like a hot honey- or the salted egg yolk sandwich, plates to share, and sweets like a Big Mac-inspired macaron. Chou is an alum of Le Bernardin and Eleven Madison Park.
Double Chicken Please opened in November 2020, following a spate of mobile cocktail pop-ups in a 1977 Volkswagen minibus.
As far as the top of the list, Barcelona’s Paradiso was named the World’s Best Bar, which is the first time the city has claimed the No. 1 spot and the first time it has been won for a bar outside of New York and London, according to a spokesperson. By the way? It’s in the back of a pastrami shop.
Other bars from New York include Katana Kitten (No. 9), Attaboy (No. 22), Overstory (No. 34), Dante (No. 36), and Employees Only (No. 47). Miami’s Cafe La Trova hit No. 21 and Chicago is back on the list with Kumiko (No. 25).
The World’s 50 Best Bars 2022, sponsored by Perrier, were unveiled at an event in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain on October 4 .
