Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah are tomorrow and it’s likely that you’re bound to forget something despite all planning — much like the Waitresses in their beloved song, Christmas Wrapping:
A&P has provided me
With the world's smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot
So on with the boots back out in the snow
To the only all night grocery
If you forgot the cranberries, too you won’t have much luck on Christmas Day. Most giant chains like Publix, Krogers, Target, and WalMart will be closed on Christmas Day. Your best bet is drug store chains for that last-minute can of cranberry sauce or bottle of wine. Small, independent bodegas are also usually open, as are many kosher grocery stores.
What about food? After the Christmas gifts are unwrapped, you might want to go out for a bite to eat. The good news is that restaurants — especially ones located in cities and tourist destinations are open, though be prepared for a wait (make reservations in advance, if you can). And there’s always the old reliable — your local Chinese restaurant which has become it’s own ritual and tradition.
If you’re looking for a caffeine fix, Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts will be open Christmas Day, although hours may vary (and locations within closed malls, shopping centers, and stores will not be open). It’s best to call ahead or Google your desired location.
If you’ve a hankering to get away from Rudolph, Frosty, and your relatives, Nosferatu opens on Christmas Day and you can spend your holiday watchin ancient vampires while munching popcorn from a souvenir coffin-shaped popcorn bucket!
Whichever way you spend your holiday, we hope it’s filled with joy and happiness.
